My wife and I were out this past Sunday and on our way back into port we were on plane doing about 4000-4200 rpms and all of a sudden the boat lost all power and was stuttering/surging up and down in rpms. I brought the throttle down and it continued to sputter/surge for a minute or so and then died completely. I tried restarting and get it to turn over for a second but died very quickly and then wouldn't turn over at all (cranking just fine). So we got towed back to the dock.

I did kind of act like the time my fuel pump went the previous season (other than that I never made it on plane the season before it just died the first time off the trailer) before so I decided to test that first since I already have the fuel pressure gauge. Low pressure pump is reading 5-6 psi and high pressure was at 55 psi which both seem to be in spec.

I also tried replacing the anti-siphon valve on the gas tank as I've heard these can go bad after a long time and I assumed mine was original (I've only had the boat for 3 years). This didn't fix the issue.

I do get some jump on the tach when I crank it so I'm thinking it has spark. I did have to replace the ignition control module at the end of season due to a crank but no start issue (difference from last year is that it never performed bad just wouldn't start one day). I did not cheap out on that module thinking it was a pretty important part and the old one seemed pretty corroded (was a GM part) and got a VP part which seems like it will hold up better to the salt air/moisture.

I also replaced the distributor cap/rotor, idle air controller, and throttle position sensor last year with aftermarket parts which I'm going to check the next time I get up to the boat and have replacements ready if I need it. I don't think it is the TPS as that seemed to be reacting fine to me moving the throttle. (I have a fox marine gateway hooked up the MEFI 4 ECM so I can get some basic info from the engine, but I will bring my actual scan tool next time to get some more in depth information).

Has anyone else had this issue? At this point because the engine is 15 years old I'm going to get some new sensors on it. I plan on replacing the IAC (again), MAP sensor, camshaft sensor, and crankshaft position sensor (can anyone give me any insight where the crankshaft position sensor is located?)

Has anyone else had anything similar happen that might be able to point me in the right direction if replacing all these sensors doesn't work? I have a noid test kit on the way so I can see if the injectors are firing when cranking, but after all this I'm kind of out of ideas.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Could be several things but I wouldn't start replacing parts just yet. Its great that you have a scan tool to check for codes and also test TPS and other things without removing them.

If your not see at last a "steady" 300 or more rpm when cranking then the ECM doesn't know when to fire spark or injectors

I noticed from the engine gateway it was showing under 200 rpm while cranking and I feel like the tach was somewhere around there except for the first second I turn the key it will jump way up and then come down and hover (definitely not the most reliable tach which is why I got the engine gateway).

Anything stand out that I should check first?

After doing some testing and lots of cranking ended up killing the starter (which was original) so had to replace that first which was a huge pain in the butt.

Once that was all set pulled off the distributor cap and the two screws that held the rotor on had completely backed out of there holes and the rotor was just completely loose inside the distributor. I guess in my rush at the end of last season to get an electrical issue fixed (which ended up being bad ignition control module) I forgot to put some thread lock on those two screws so they just backed themselves over the season so far.

Hopefully maybe this will help someone else in the future.
