Hoping someone has experienced this issue... I bought the boat new in 2004 and sold it to a friend in 2010 when I started having kids. Friend started his family and boat sat last year so I bought it back this spring as my kids are now old enough to enjoy. Put the boat in the water for the first time this year on Friday. Engine fired immediately but when I put it in gear (forward and reverse) I got a grinding noise. Put it up on plane and noise got louder. Trimmed the drive a little and the noise went away. Turn the wheel even slightly and the noise is back. I ran it for 10-15 minutes before aborting the mission. If I had been wearing earplugs I would have never known anything was wrong; boat felt and performed normally. No water in the boat afterwards.
2004 Four Winns Horizon 210. 205 hours. Volvo Penta 5.7 Gi DP-SM. Gear oil was changed as part of the end of season service in 2017. Outdrive has never been off the boat, each year the marina doing the end of season work inspects the bellows and such and say they look good.
Gimbal bearing? U joints? I would appreciate any ideas. I live in NW Michigan, we have lots of boats but a very short boating season so mechanics are very busy right now. I'll be lucky to have the boat back this season if I have to take it to a marina.
