Re: 2004 5HP 4 stroke trouble
A lot of those are sold by non-dealers that don't have a clue how to properly set one up. They pull it out of the box and load it in your car. That's where Low Price means No Service.

It is the responsibility of the seller to supply you a motor in good running order. Now Merc is selling them at your local Farm & Barns. Retail Stores have nobody on hand to properly check the motors out and fine tune them prior to delivery, let alone the proper facilities. Many buyers of these end up dissatisfied with their purchases for just the reason you describe. My best advice is to take it to a servicing dealer to have it properly prepped. It won't be covered under warranty! You'll have to pay for it. You may feel free to submit your reciept to the seller for reimbursement, but don't hold your breath. You won't get it out of them. If you got it from a dealer, then they should do it for you at no charge. That's part of the Dealer Agreement.

Why isn't it covered under warranty? Well, there are certain adjustments that just have to be made to account for conditions in your area. I happen to live just down the road from the factory and in most cases, adjusting is minimal if necessary at all. Now if you lived a mile up in Denver, the factory adjustments would be way off. Even down at sea level in NYC.

The shifting problem? That I'd expect to be covered. The idling problem? Nope! So much for a quick answer to a simple question.
