Last weekend I crossed the negative and positive connections when hooking up the battery and got a huge spark. When I hooked the connections up correctly, I could not get the motor to start, not a noise or anything. I can get the bilge, nav lights, and running lights to power, but engine will not start. I can't even get the tach to show power. First thought that it was the battery and I took it in to Sears to do a check and it came back fully charged and in excellent condition. I even tried a brand new battery borrowed from my Marina and no difference. Next thing I thought of was a blown fuse, so I tested all fuses and they were good. Even tried the shortstop coming from the positive connection and it is fine. All connections are in great shape, kill switch connected, and boat is in neutral so I don't know what is going on. Does anyone have any ideas?

direct connect the starter for a moment just to be sure it will turn, then look at your starter relay. Good Luck!

There is normally a fuse on the engine. If that fuse is blown the starter will not engage. The fuses on the fuse panel at the console of a boat are "boat" related -- not "engine" related. The picture below is of the fuse on a Mercury (in a holder at the very top of the picture) but yours should have one that would look similar, although it may be an in-line style fuse.

fuse on the 90 yamaha is located on the lower stbd side aft a couple of inchs from the main battery lead on the starter relay.
hook the battery up backwaards and you hope its the only component blown.

Thanks so much for the help guys! Went today and found blown fuse inside outboard motor just like described. There was actually an extra fuse next to the blown fuse and I hooked it up and started it right away. Thanks again!
