Hi all i have a 2004 bayliner 175 with a 3.0 mercruiser and while winterizing the boat i noticed the motor mount appeared to have come loose. The part of the mount that is fastened to the floor. I began to retighten the bolts but noticed that only one became tight the other was begining to strip. This bolt is also the one on the left side of the motor or steering wheel side of the boat. My question is what exactly is this bolt, is it a lag screw into the fiberglass or is it a bolt that i can some how access to tighten? if its a lag screw what do you recommend i do to fix this problem? This bolt is also the side where to motor pulls up on.... Thanks for your time , Andrew

Re: 2004 bayliner motor mount ?

Those are typically lag screws. Also typical is that the stringer (support) is a block of wood covered with fiberglass. If your screws are stripped it's likely that the stringers have rotted...meaning the wood inside the fiberglass shell has rotted from some type of water intrusion. It is not a good thing. If your engine isn't fastened securely it will move around and eventually tear the splines out of your engine coupler...not to mention just plain unsafe.

Go to the restoration forum and do some reading. Those guys repair and replace those stringers just for fun...:D

Moving to restoration forum.
You have a rotten stringer that the front mount sets on. Here in the restoration forum, they can explain how to fix it.
Good luck.

If a 2004 model rotted out with proper care and maint, I would personally hire an attorney. That is just plain unacceptable.

Re: 2004 bayliner motor mount ?

i do not think its rot guys. i think it may be that the previous owner never knew it was loose and never tightened it and that caused the bolt to bore the wood. I have owned the boat for 2 of its five years of life and in my hands it sits under and over hang out of the rain with the nose up. previous owner had it stored in a drive way with a good pitch using a pole into the tongue. Could it be a factory defect where it was not corrected? the bolt still holds the mount in place and needs some force to move it not completely shot just does not get tight either.

Anyways the problem is the problem and im curious can someone tell me how to fix this? Since it can and will cause bigger problems? Thanks again, andrew

It could be rot or it could be a stripped hole where the lag is sitting.

The only way to find out is to drill into your motor mount and look at the wood that comes out.. dry and solid.. then you are fine..wet or mushy.. then you got rot. this is called a "core sample" search these forums if you want more info.

I would be suprised if it was rot in 2004 aswell... if its just stripped out wood you can fill it with NidaBond or a similar product and reset your lag.
