Some of you seen the thread in DC on my eBay purchase. Well its here now, started up after charging the battery and I rode it home. Now looking through the manual it calls for HD (Harley Davidson) motor oil, then says if you can't get it any diesel engine oil will work fine in a pinch. I am going to change the oil and filter/s this weekend, so why would I NOT want to run something like Mobil 1 synthetic oil? The bike has less than 5000 miles on it, seems that now would be the time to switch.

rwise, exxon/mobile also makes Mobil 1 v twin motorcycle oil but everything I've read on the subject say that Mobil 1 (the car verson) in 15w-50 or 20w-50 if fine for your Harley.

I personally use 20w50 dino in my Harley.

I'm guessing it's so you can pick up some HD accessories while at the dealership getting oil. :p

I'd take it to the dealer to start with... You just got the bike and it would be a good opportunity to get to know those guys anyway.

I use the Honda brand oil in my bike and though it costs a little more I know it's the right oil.

You'll also find lots of people run AeroShell. Its for planes but people run it in Harleys quite a bit. My dad always used a 20-50 back in tha day. In these modern times he used Mobil 1 till he found Royal Purple. He swears by it but you know how that goes. While I'm not Lubedude or TheOilDoc I can tell you that you want an oil with plenty of zinc in it. Car oils that are made for the street do not have enough zinc in them.

46 years on or involved in HD (own 3 now). 20-50 Dino GTX for years. Now even down to what 20-50 is on sale. Its a roller bearing motor, roller cams, bigger clearances because its air-cooled, doesn't share its oil with anything else (like a jap bike,,aka Honda, that also uses the same oil that runs through the gearcase and clutch). Any decent 20-50 Dino oil will work fine, and the motor will be around longer than you will. Never seen a HD related oil problem.. If you want, you can run HD oil (Dino), as it has more additives, but I'm in the camp of just change, and change often, any oil, and forgedabouit

Nice bike i386

Well I went with HD's syn3 oil, goes in everthing on it, crank, trany, chain. I thought since I just got it, really don't know much about the bike I would have the local dealer do the 5000 mile check up. Everthing checked out good! The syn3 oil was $25 more and is a full and true synthetic oil formulated for Harley. I may well go mobil 1 next change, whatever I do with the next change will be what I keep in it cause I don't like changing brands often, put something in and stick to it!
