This engine has around 600 hours on it. I have used recommended type & weight oil since new, changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals, fresh water use only. Never had an error code or any work performed other than new plugs, fluids and filter change.
A couple weeks back I noticed a chatter/rattle when I start the engine initially. It only lasts a split second then runs normally. If I shut the engine off then use my electric trolling motor for let's say 20-30 minutes then restart it, it will rattle. It rattles less (quieter) than during initial start up. Any ideas? Should I worry about it?

Re: 2004 Johnson 140 4-stroke

Well since this engine was made by Suzuki, not sure why it got switched to this forum. But anyway, sounds to me like your hearing some valve train ticking before oil pressure gets up/over to it.

Have you ever had the valves adjusted in those 600 hours, if not then I'd get that done. I don't htink they put hydraulic lifters in them so I doubt it's a lifter collapsing, I'd bet they're out of adjustment. It's part of 4 stroke maintenance to get them adjusted.
