Hello everyone,

I am semi- new to the boating world and have been able to fix my boat my self but this time I cannot figure it out. I have a 2004 Johnson 90 hp with a ois 2000 ignition system. My boat was running great until I took it out of the water and went to flush the motor. When I went to start it kind of hesitated and sounded like it shorted out . I checked the plugs all four lost spark. I left it for a little while and retried starting it and it had spark, but was running horrible on idle. then when I rechecked no spark, so the spark will come back at random times . I replaced all the spark plugs no help, then removed the yellow wire( the ignition wire) and sill nothing. I have came to the conclusion, that it is either the stator or the power pack or maybe the optical sensor. I have herd that once the stator goes it goes the spark will not come back. but on the other hand I herd when the power pack goes bad it had problems at high RPMs which I have not had a problem with. I do not have the tools to test the stator or the power pack I was hoping someone who has high knowledge or experience with this situation can guide me in the right path. Please Let me know what you guys all think it would be extremely appreciated !!!!!!!!!!

Without tests with the right test equipment it is a big guess. Power pack is the most likely but that is WAG.

Like James said without the right equipment you just end up throwing parts at it. that being said I have worked on a couple over the years that had the same symptoms and after diagnosed found to have had a bad optical sensor. (the part about the spark being intermittent)
