This is likely a question you have been asked a million times so please forgive. This weekend I started up the motor to make sure all was ok and after a few minutes the alarm went off for either "no oil" or "low oil" (The timing of the beep was 1001 stop 1002 stop)This happened last year and I topped off the VRO which was very low and the problem was solved. This time the VRO is full. This motor has less than 100 hours. I have decided that I do not want to take a chance of damaging this great motor so I drained out all of the gas, this is a belly tank so took some time and refilled with 50 to 1 gas. I only disconnected the wires to the VRO, (did not disconnect the feeder hose because the primer ball has remained full and hard and the VRO is full. My reasoning is that I can use the boat with the mix gas for now and get the VRO back on line after the season is over. The alarm is still going off. One other thing which may be related, the primer ball on the fuel line has to be squeezed more than I think should be necessary to get the motor running. Even after is starts but has not yet warmed up I need to squeeze the primer ball. Is it possible I am getting air in the line which is the root of the problem. Thanks for you help, John

Re: 2004 Johnson 90

The soft primer bulb is a sign of a fuel leak. Could be sucking in air (I just went through this). But the 2004 90hp is supposed to have a System Check tachometer. Thats the tach with four indicator lights. When the ignition is turned on, the lights come on in sequence. One of the lights is for the VRO/Oil.

Do you have the System Check tach? Are the lights coming on correctly?

First, I was wrong it is a 2005, anyway I think it does not have lights. This was a project boat. I mounted the motor two years ago and at the time placed the alarm under the dash out of the way. I will check to see if it has lights. I spoke with the "public assistance" today at Johnson and he suggested I run the motor for a while to see if the oil in the VRO goes down. I think I will put a temporary hose on the VRO to a container and see if it is pumping oil. If I find out the alarm has the lights you are referring to I will let you know. Thanks John
