I am having an issue with my 2004 Johnson PLSRR 2 stroke motor. The first issue I have been having for a while is the idling. It idles fine out of the water on a hose, but in the water it cuts out and will stall when you put it into gear, I noticed the spark plugs were fouled so I changed them but they keep fouling out. Lately the motor has been getting progressively worse, it will leak two stroke unburned oil down the bottom of the motor and the air silencer is full of fuel. When I ran it a week ago on my driveway the **** stream coming out was steaming and there was smoke coming out of everywhere with large amounts of gunk inside the propeller so I replaced the thermostat and no luck, I also tried cleaning the carbs by just spraying carb cleaner in the jets and the intake still no change. I have done all my maintenance myself because I have been screwed by many mechanics. I checked all fuel and oil lines they appear to be good with good flow, and there is new plugs and a new water impeller , seems to me the motor is running rich . I was hoping someone is able to give me good advice on what this may be. I have also heard that maybe with floating pin in stuck on a carb. Is there any way to check without pulling out the carb.

Chris.... I retired in 1991 so the design and circuitry of your engine is foreign to me, however I'm inserting a few bits of advice that may be of help to you and at the same time have your problem put back at the top of the list.

Regardless of any problem, start with the basics if for no other reason peace of mind and to get them out of the way. The starting point is to:

1 - Check the compression of all cylinders. What are the psi reading of the individual cylinders?

2 - With all of the spark plugs removed, rig a spark tester whereas you can set a gap of 7/16" for the spark to jump. The gap is important. Checking spark by using the spark plugs is a waste of time. No tester?... see below.

NOTE: The spark should jump that 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP! Does it?

You can use a medium size philips screwdriver (#2 I believe) inserted into the spark plug boot spring connector, then hold the screwdriver shank approximately 7/16" away from the block to check the spark or build the following:

A spark tester can be made with a piece of 1x4 or 1x6, drive a few finishing nails through it, then bend the pointed ends at a right angle. You can then adjust the gap by simply twisting the nail(s). Solder a spark plug wire to one which you can connect to the spark plug boots, and a ground wire of some kind to the other to connect to the powerhead somewhere. Use small alligator clips on the other end of the wires to connect to ground and to the spark plug connector that exists inside of the rubber plug boot.

Using the above, one could easily build a spark tester whereas they could connect 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders all at one time. The ground nail being straight up, the others being bent, aimed at the ground nail. A typical 4 cylinder tester follows:

..........X1..........X2

.................X..(grd)

..........X3..........X4

Carburetors: Remove the face plate so that you can observe the carburetor throats. Pump the fuel primer bulb up hard while your looking at the carburetor faces. If fuel flows out of any carburetor, no matter how much pressure you apply to that bulb... that carburetor is flooding and requires cleaning and rebuilding. If any is flooding, it's a good idea to clean and rebuild all of them.

Hopefully another member who is knowedagable of your engines design will jump in here to add to my comments.

Post a picture of the primer / start injector and the red lever on it.

Do a cylinder drop test on it to see if you have a cylinder or two not firing.

Ading to "racerone's" comment...... The fuel Primer Solenoid red lever should be facing the other end of the solenoid. This would be the automatic (run) position of the lever.
