This is an update.

I pulled the starter, figured I would disassemble, found out the brushes are in a cup on the bottom, one of the four brushes was stuck, not sliding in its slot. lightly sanded its sides and reassembled, it works fine. Easy fix.

I have a 2004 Merc 125 2 stroke. Great motor, trolls very nice, great top end power, very efficient. I am very pleased.

I bought it with a very nice Bayliner 185 fish and ski boat last summer, ran great. Stored it outside over the winter, covered (Michigan).

Problem is that ever since the spring startup the starter appears slow / weak. First try at starting is ok, second try and beyond, the starter virtually comes to a halt for a second or 2, then like it gets enough power to turn, but does not seem as fast as last year.

Charged the battery, same problem. Replaced the battery, same problem. Checked the battery connections, appear fine.

I suspect it is the starter, but I am curious if anyone has any experience with this. Scares me that it might not work and I am stuck out in the water.

I am sure I can replace the starter myself, but I do not want to waste $250 if it is not the starter, I am looking for any comments.

Thanks.

Mark
