Hello everyone,

I am the new owner of a 05, 17' Carolina Skiff with a 2004 Yahama 70 2 stroke installed. The Tach will not read over 3100 RPMs at WOT and am cruising about 32 MPH according to my GPS.. The carbs are fully opening, and it has a 13-1/2 x 14 pitch prop installed. The Tach is currently set at 6 pulses. Any ideas on what to check?
I would take it back to the dealer but time is limited and I would rather fix this on my own if possible.

Search the forum...

You set it to 12 pulse, there is a set of switches under the lid on the back of the tach (assuming you have a digital tach with trim and oil level as well).
One of the switches is not used the other switches between 6 and 12 pulses.

If you have the analogue one you turn the dial setting under the lid, set it to 12.

Thanks for the info. I have the analog Tach. Guess I have something to do tonight instead of lawn work.

Ok,

Just pulled the TAch. I have no setting of 12 on this thing.

It's a teleflex brand tach if that means anything.

Re: 2004 Yahama 70 TAch settings

there is a 5P, 6P, 4P/8C, 3P/6C and a 2P/4C available to select from.

It currently idles about 750 RPM with the tach set @ 6P I move it to 3P/6C and the idle speed then reads 1150 RPM. It does not sound like it is idling at 1100 RPM either.

Re: 2004 Yahama 70 TAch settings

5p is for the 4 wire rectifer on the jonnies or some chyslers. the 6p setting is for a 12 pole alt I am going on a limb and thinking the 3p6c setting is what your going to need. teleflex has a tech contact on thier website. email it and tell them what motor you have and ask for the tach setting. that is why I use factory stuff. works right first time everytime. but even then I use my inductive tach to verify hull tach operation. could also be the tach/prop/hull was never set up correctly from the start. see that all the time.
