I have 2, 2004 Yamaha 4 stroke, short shaft, pull start outboards. One ran for a day the other has never started. The crank case filled with water on both. Yamaha Tech. dept. is aware of the defect. Seems the exhaust is low to the water and allows water to be pulled back into the case if it doesn't start on the first pull. The sad part is that Yamaha is aware of the problem and will not fix it or give me a refund or replace with a long shaft. If anyone else is fighting this problem perhaps we can get together for a class action law suit. I had always heard good things about Yamaha. Can't believe they won't stand behind their product.

yamaha did not build it.<br /> that is a good old usa merc product all the way down to the prestolite ign system. there is a tech bulliten out on if the motor weighs to much for the hull and causes it to sit to low in the water to replace the exhaust pipe with a modified one. its not a product defect its dealer negligence and customer not knowing enough about what is going on. horse power ratings have nothing to do with hull strength, transom height or motor wieght. good luck and keep posting

That's very interesting about the 4 Stroke. I have a 2004 Yamaha and have had nothing but problems. It now has it's 3rd carburator on the engine and still runs terrible. I just put it in the water yesterday and it ran fine for about 10 minutes and then an alarm went off on the throttle. After that, the unit would no longer run faster than idle. Yamaha did comp this last carb, because the previous one was on less than 6 months. Do you know of any bulletin for repairing the problem? I agree with you. If it's a known defect, I would gladly enter into a lawsuit to get something moving. I have owned Yamaha products all my life, but after this experience, I never will again.
