On a lark I bought a 2005 15hp four stroke mercury with its top rod pitched right through the crankcase, right at the junction beween what I would call the block and the base. I know that I will need lotsa parts to fix the motor, but my question is directed only to what likely is included with part number 900-835407A02 described by Mercury as "crankcase assembly". For ~$400 on my doorstep I would expect only the bare castings.

Do I assume correctly that the cylinders -- as part of the block -- would already be machined to standard sizes?

Do I further assume correctly that none of the reciprocating parts would be included?

It's kinda fun to speculate what caused this catestrophic failure: there is no sign of heat on the rod cap or on the crank journal. In fact the journal is smooth to the touch (tho' a mike might tell a very different story)

One rod cap bolt was in place, but there's no sign of the other.

Lastly, I was able to remove the rod cap w/o taking the case apart!

I got the motor very cheap, and in fact bought it to get the rather nice engine stand it was on. But it's very tempting to make it go again.

Looks like it had a babbit bearing and got wiped out. Not sure but there was a post where they ran 50:1 and should have ran 16:1 and blew the bearings. (Insufficient oil) I would have a look at the rest of the bearings as well. The crank is probably shot You will need at least one new rod. Can,t say about the case although I figure it should be bored to standard size in the sleeves. A case is a case and not a short block or long block so I wouldn,t think you will get any componants with the case. JMO

My thoughts exactly, except for the oil/fuel ratio, as this is a four stroke engine. See the oil filter?

Anyhow, I'll mike the crankshaft before I shuck out the bux for the crankcase assy. But before I do shuck 'em out, I'd sure like to know whether the bores arrive ready-to-use, or whether they need sleeving, plating, or the like.
