On a lark I bought a 2005 15hp four stroke mercury with its top rod pitched right through the crankcase, right at the junction beween what I would call the block and the base. I know that I will need lotsa parts to fix the motor, but my question is directed only to what likely is included with part number 900-835407A02 described by Mercury as "crankcase assembly". For ~$400 on my doorstep I would expect only the bare castings.
Do I assume correctly that the cylinders -- as part of the block -- would already be machined to standard sizes?
Do I further assume correctly that none of the reciprocating parts would be included?
It's kinda fun to speculate what caused this catestrophic failure: there is no sign of heat on the rod cap or on the crank journal. In fact the journal is smooth to the touch (tho' a mike might tell a very different story)
One rod cap bolt was in place, but there's no sign of the other.
Lastly, I was able to remove the rod cap w/o taking the case apart!
I got the motor very cheap, and in fact bought it to get the rather nice engine stand it was on. But it's very tempting to make it go again.
