In water Good Friday, normally a turn-key, professionally winterized each year.
This 2005 Johnson 50-horse outboard is attached to a 20-ft Odyssey pontoon.
Used fairly frequently, but at very low speeds on a small fishing/skiing lake.

* First issues occured on Father's Day week-end
Stopped while bringing throttle to idle
Would not start right away without using the throttle warm-up/accelerator
Nursed it back to pier
* Next issue June 30th, about 10-days later, with next use
Started fine, as always, cruised most of the day, when returning to pier, again brought the trottle down to idle, engine stopped, this time it would not start, required tow.
* Today it turns-over, but will not start. Smells like fuel in the oil. One Marina says it's the fuele pump, as they 'always' go out on these outboards, another Marina has the exact opposite reaction in that they seldom change the fuel pumps. forgot to mention this is a 4 stroke

Have ordered the part since all Marinas are two weeks out for service. Hope I am not throwing the wrong parts at the problem, and to top that off, I do not expect the part to arrive until after the 4th Holiday!

Thanks in advance for your time and input to this dilemma.

Re: 2005 50 horse johnson outboard/starting issues

I'm Far from an Expert, but recently I have had Starting Problems and I think that I narrowed it down the the Primer Solenoid. Read a few other post with Primer Solenoids and see if it helps. I am currently trying to source one at the best price (so far for a new one I have got $168)

I hope this helps, I have received a lot of good advice from this site already and just want to contribute some positive input

Happy Fourth

Harry, thanks so much for your input. I will investigate a Primer Solenoid.
However, I should also mention that we were leaving a trail of fuel (or oil) behind us as we moved foward. Do you think this symptom correlates to the fuel pump or primer solenoid?

Are you certain you have a four-stroke? If you have a 4-stroke Johnson you DO NOT have a primer solenoid. That engine is fuel injected (and by the way, it is built by Suzuki). Only if the engine is a two-stroke do you have a primer solenoid. If you feel (or smell) gas in the oil (assuming again it is indeed a four-stroke), then the oil and filter needs to be changed. If you bought a fuel pump for either engine you have very likely spent money on something that is not broken. Fuel in the oil says the injectors are delivering fuel and you probably have an ignition problem.
