OK people I need to pick some brains. I recently bought am 18' 2005 North River aluminum boat with a 75hp Evinrude E-Tec from a private party. It was over the warranty period by 6 months but with only 262 hours on it. I ran it for 5 hours & the #3 fuel injector had intemittant failure dropping RPM for 20 seconds or so, but also later dying at an idle some times.

Cut my halibut trip short & took it to my local Evinrude dealer. End result was they needed to replace #3 fuel injector, (out of warranty of course) for a mere $608 plus another $275 labor. I got a computer printout of the motor at this time.

Another fishing trip at 293 hours it died. I did not notice anything to indicate a problem before it lost power & 20 seconds later died. No indicator lights as to problems, just slowed to 1/2 throttle & died. I was only running at about 4000 RPM at the time.

Now the same mechanics checked it out, compression was #1, 115#, #2, 115# & #3, 15#. They tore the head off & #3 cylinder was scored enough it needs to be rebored & oversize piston put in.

Now comes the situation, the previous owner & I both use the DX100 oil. It appears that there was not enough lubrication on that cylinder. My mechanic says he can get it going, but really wants to fix the problem. He has talked to the factory but when I last talked to him, he seems to not be able to get them to give any advice.

He has had the same problem 2 years ago on a 90hp, with no help from the factory. He rebored & the motor has been running OK since. Now he gets another of the same class (3 cylinder)motor.

He has observed that on some of the newer motors that the factory has made changes in the oiling system, but they are unwilling to pass along any improvements to retrofit existing motors. It seems to me that they don't want the word out & they would have to recall a bunch of motors. meanwhile the dealer is the bad guy & the customer pays thru the nose at a price of $2000 that may well have been a factory problem.

Does anyone out there have any words of wisdom? I have mechaniced on many motors in my lifetime, but with this computerized motor, kind of places us old geezers at a disadvantage.

PS, just looKed at the printout & found something I don't understand. At 105 & at 108 hours it had "oil pressure pulses in distributioin manifold not detected". What does this really mean? And at 185 hours before final failure it should not be related.

Just my thought, if #3 injector went bad it may have glitched EMM or EMM is defective and caused injector to fail for that cylinder. A defective/wrong information to injector would cause a lean burn thus melting piston,as it will be hard for oil pump by its design not to supply oil to one cylinder and not supply it to others.
