2005-F40TLRD-starter engages but only spins

Starter gear engages flywheel but shaft only spins-gear doesn't go back down. I cleaned all contacts-battery, starter/solonoid, and engine ground--even put on new strong battery-same result. What else can I do? Thanks, Phillip

Found other feedback from "Frequently asked Questions" and seems I need a new bendix--third time in three years with same engine--doesn't make sense.

Are you putting some kind of lube on the bendix or shaft?

This will cause the unit to slip

Yes, I did lubricate it--thought it might be sticking. Is there a way to remove the lubricant?

I have removed from the starter and soaked with break cleaner or some other type of degreaser and then reassembled.
Make sure you only add a little grease to the shaft do not spray anything on it.
