Hello- I have a 2005 Johnson 40 hp 2 cylinder 2 stroke with not 5 hours running time on it.Today I arrived at the lake for 4 days of fishing and the motor strts right up.I go out of the harbor and go to throttle up and no power at all.I pull the throttle back and it idles fine, alittle more throttle and it runs good and then more throttle and it starts sputtering with no poer at all.In neeutral, the choke lever up, revs up fine.I put 2 BN plugs in, change tanks, ( both with new gas) again no power.I take the plastic cover off the carbs and run it and the butterflys open, can see gas going into cylinders from both carbs but again, no power. This motor ran excellent last Fall before I stored it. I ran the motor out of gas completely, oiled both cylinders and no it won't run. What a wasted 500 mile ride for nothing.Just would appreciate some input before I head to a dealer. The motors warranty just ran out ove rthe Winter too. Thanks in advance.

pete,
shame about the busted trip - but you'll have it up & running in no time.

what you described is a classic symptom of clogged high-speed jets, so don't run it until it's fixed - if one cylinder is starved for fuel it's also not getting lubrication.

First, compression test.
Next, spark test - set your tester for 7/16".

If compression & spark are good, then its carb rebuild time.

Highly recommend switching to champion plugs.

If you want to maintain this motor yourself (and no reason not to), this would be a good time to order a factory service manual. try www.shop.evinrude.com
