When is the last time you changed the lower unit (gearbox) oil? When you did, what color was the oil? Did it have any bubbles (containing water). If it had been sitting vertically for over 24 hours, did water come out first when you pulled the drain plug?

Do you know that your oil pump is pumping oil to the engine...see smoke in the exhaust.....assuming you are using the engine internal oil pump, not pre-mix?

I've never touched the lower unit.
And I have just bought the boat about 3months ago and it was awful to start and the previous owner said that he had a problem starting it before and that it was the top carburettor a jet was blocked in it so thats the reason I have cleaned the 3 carbs on it and the fuel pump.
It was working fine the day before had it out for about 2 hours with no problems and it just made that noise the next day wen I went back down to flush it .

And I put some 2 stroke oil in the petrol just to make sure it had some in as dont no if the oil injection is working so I put it in the petrol just so I new it had oil

Check the LU oil anyway. You need to know the condition and lots of folks change it annually.....running lots of hours, or leaving boat in the water for extended periods.

And how would I be able to check for piston slap.
And has anyone got a brakedown manual for this engine

When exactly does it make the knocking noise? In neutral, in gear? Low RPM's, mid RPM's? Sound like from the lower unit or the motor?

Need a bit more info to really be able to help.

It makes the noise only when ticking over as when I took it out on the sea and put it on full throttle couldn't here it and it was nice and quiet

But never put it in gear when it was in the drum at the boat yard but I will do when I go back down tomorrow and ill check see if the noise is still there in gear forward and reverse but the noise was still there when I flushed it but I only had it on tick over

I’d do a compression test on it first. Just to rule out anything serious with the engine itself. Is there oil in the injection tank ? What did you mix the oil in fuel at ratio ?
Check the gear oil ASAP too. See if it makes the same noise in gear at idle too. Pull the plugs and turn it over on the key and listen for any noise from it. Check the state of plugs for colour and make sure they are right ones.
Looks like the U.K. somewhere. Where are you ? I’m in Scotland

Thats the compression reading. And yes there new plugs in it and the plugs are what the handbook says for the engine. And I have pre mixed the fuel at 50to1 as the hand book says. And yes im from the UK im in the northeast near Newcastle.

If there is anyone on here with the same engine for sale or no of anyone selling one the same I would be very interested in buying one and then I would have plenty of time to repair this one i have on the boat

Ok. So I’d say your gauge is very optimistic but still giving an idea that the engine itself is ok. I’d defo look at that gear oil now.

First of all you need to pinpoint where the knocking noise is coming from - motor or lower unit. If it's to difficult when listening by ear get as I mentioned above - a mechanics stethoscope. I've used one for decades pinpointing issues.

Compression test...
Checks to see if the combustion chamber is fine or compromised.
Dry test checks piston rings against cylinder walls, valves against seats, blown head gasket, cracked head. But you don't know the culprit until tear down.
If two adjacent cylinders share a low reading it points towards a blown head gasket and/or cracked head.
Wet test (some oil) if the above test was performed and one cylinder was lower this will determine bad rings if the compression test is higher.
If lower than should be compression in all cylinders could be crank and cam out of sync. Example, timing chain jumped. Or possibly badly burnt valves or carbon deposits not allowing valves to properly seat.

What a compression test won't tell you (short list).
Bad bearings such as rod bearings worn enough to cause rod knock.
Worn piston pins allowing knocking from pin to rod or pin to piston.
Slightly worn pistons (tapper effect) slapping against piston walls.

A compression test is not necessarily one of my first test to run when diagnosing a problem. Unless there is oil in the anti-freeze, anti-freeze in the oil, smoke in the exhaust.

That's why a stethoscope is an important diagnostic tool. Not only can you pin point where the knocking is coming from it can be used for such things as what is squealing - alternator, water pump, tenshion pulley, idler pulley, A/C compressor, etc...
