Have read many posts re beeping mercs. None specific to my motor. Please help. Got pontoon, used only 2yrs of the 4yrs due to area flooding. Runs great, no missing, peeing just fine, just replaced impeller, starts easily, quirky on low idle, no smoke except on startup for just a few seconds. When first got it, around 4k, there was a loud beep beep beep coming from the dash. If I throttled down, it went away. If I stop motor, it stops. If I go from 1k idle to 5k, passing 4k, it never starts up the beeps. If it starts bbbeeps at 4k and I go up to 5k, it does not stop the beeps. If I keep it around 3-3.5k or lower or 4.5-5.2k, no beeps.
The above was month 1 & 2. Now I start the engine cold, it bbbeeps and the bbbeeps stop but does it once in a while. Full oil, cold engine, still bbbeeps. I went to fishing hole in Stlouis, the service mgr says that motor has only ONE alarm for head and oil, a continuous beep, not the two diff ones like on older motors. And it should not be bbbeeping at all. Now it bbbeeps whenever it wants to and still always stops at lower rpm and idle. Last weekend while riding, I got the solid beeeeeeeeeeep, checked the oil and it was close to empty, my error paying more attention to the bikini'ed gas attendent than the boat, so filled it in a quiet cove and the long beeeeeeeeep stopped. However the intermittent bbbeep continues. So i know the oil alarm is functioning. I know, its a boat, assume nothing.
Water pressure between 1030 and 1100 if a clock face. Peeing is constant. I usually fill oil with gas fillup, 99.9% of the time. Any suggs or fixes would be appreciated. Sorry its so confusing, it just does it when it feels like it. Also last weekend, was looking for something under the helm and noticed a golf ball sized wasp nest on the underside of the ignition lockset, covering one or two of the lugs. I carefully removed the wasp mud nest, cleaned off the lugs where the wires are secured, but it changed nothing like I hoped it would do. And some days...it will bbbeep only once, others its an all day annoyance. Always had i/o's in the past, my first outboard and pontoon, wonder if I erred in my choice.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. The boat is 200 miles away, so its a drag working on it long distance. Thanks again, Ed
