ok my friend has just rebuilt his 3.0 and before it was running properly aside form low compression... now that the new engine is in it will not run (yes it was cleaned of old fuel and set in a box on the shelf) for crap... after reading some of the story's here and on other sites I'm wondering if there is an EASY way to replace it with a "normal" mercruiser carb? could it be as simple as bolting the new old style carb on and plugging the wires originally from the "solenoid" to the choke?? or is that a pipe dream? any help you can give would be great!!

It can be done but maybe its not the carb? Maybe its the rebuild?

Suggest start checking everything from compression, timing, firing order, fuel pressure, power, etc

The TKS is pretty much the same as the 2GC carb. Once the module has extended to block the enrichment passage it acts just like the 2GC. Power is supplied to the module when the key is turned ON via the Red/Purple thru a 20 amp fuse, and the oil pressure switch supplies a ground to the module.

IMO yes you should be able to replace the TKS with a 2 bbl carb. Need to splice into the purple wire to route to the choke.

you can use any switched 12v source for the choke , eg: the "B" wire from #6

The oil pressure switch (6) is not switched ON with the key, its there to apply a ground to the TKS solenoid (module).

I do not see a purple wire in the diagram you posted

The purple wire is switched on by the key. The purple wire is not listed in the above pic because this is just the TKS wiring. The purple wire goes to your coil on the + side
