I have inherited a 2005 Mercury 8 HP 2 stroke outboard engine which appears to be in pristine condition. However , before I run it I would appreciate if anyone could tell me what the oil to petrol ratio is. I suspect it is 100/1 but I'm not sure so just trying to be safe rather than sorry ! . Thank you very much.

Thanks for the replies. I just found a Quicksilver sticker on the engine and it says 100/1 , so seems to me that most likely this is the right mix. If I take the advice given here and run it on a 50/1 mix I guess it will not harm the engine but if it's meant to be run at 100/1 mix, will running it on 50/1 cause the engine to smoke a lot ?

50:1 smokes double than 100:1, don't idle or troll for extended time periods or will foul the plugs prematurely. If in need to do so, go for a wot run as if stealing the combo for one minute to clean plugs.

OMC tried 100 to 1 on their engines a number of years ago. They gave it up because there were issues with corrosion on prolonged storage. Newer oils and newer manufacturing techniques may make a difference and allow 100-1. Remember that variable rate oil engines run about 100 to 1 at low speeds and increase it to 50to1 at full throttle.. If you do decide to use 100 to 1 then try to run a tank of tried-and-true 50-1 through it before you store it for the season.
