I bought this particular boat with an after market Holley carburetor on it. Long story short is it’s snapped the starter bolts twice now. My mechanic can’t find any water intrusion. He seems to think that the carburetor is dumping too much fuel. It has a generic Holley rebuild kit just put in and it still did it and seems to be adjusted just fine. Any suggestions of what to do besides buy a new carburetor from VP because they want 1300 dollars for one.

Thanks

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... If yer mechanic is right, the spark plugs should be drippin' wet, soaked in raw gasoline,....

If that's the case, I'd think the float level is Waayyy off, 'n gas could be seen, runnin' through the carb,.....

If that's Not the case, you've still got some diagnosin' to do,.....

Are ya usin' the proper starter bolts,..?? plain ole 3/8" bolts won't work properly,....

Yes using starter bolts order from Volvo Penta. My mechanic isn’t sure what else to do besides replace the carburetor. I’ve got so much money into this motor it’s getting not to be worth it unfortunately. If not carburetor or water, what else could it be?

Ayuh,.... Ok,.... Is this a newer style PM motor type starter that weighs under 10 lbs,..??

Or the old style starter that weighs 20 lbs plus,..??

If it's the newer style permanent magnet style starter,....
Grind 1/4" off the threaded end of the bolts, 'n try it,....

The new style starters need slightly shorter bolts to bind the starter to the block,....
The too long a bolt bottoms out, Feelin' tight, but they ain't,...
Engage the starter, 'n it schucks around, causin' a bind, then busted flywheel teeth, starters, 'n starter bolts,....

That I am not sure of, what about adding 1/4 inch or so of washers? If not that what other possibilities am I looking at?

Coller that forces starter alignment won't push all the way in with washers. There is an SAE and metric bolt, make sure by engine S/N, comparing original if never swapped before you got it or trying both and seeing what fits better for which to run. Also starter on my GLP-A has brace on front that keeps it from kicking (attached at stud on back of starter and where flush hose mounts on block). Most of torque bolts can take is typically 3-4 thread engagement so make sure at absolute minimum you keep that if your cutting bolts. My 03 has Holley oem.
