I just bought a 206 cc key largo last week from a private seller with a 05 yamaha 150. The motor runs and sounds great. took it out this weekend and it ran fine for about an hour. I was getting ready to move to another spot and just got up on plane and it revved really high and then shutdown. it started right back up but the propellar will not engage. I had to be towed back in by sea tow. When its in neutral the prop spins with no problems. in either reverse or forward it wont but (to me that means the gears are still intact?) I checked the oil in the lower unit and it was a little dirty but otherwise it was ok. I flushed the engine but did not try to see if the prop will move in gear now. Tomorrow after work I was gonna hook the water up to it and see if the prop will move now. Any ideas of what I may have going on here?

you need to do some very basic investigating first, easy one, the prop hub has "spun" that is the rubber bush has stripped and needs replacing, test by marking the prop and hum, then giving it a very short run and see if the marks still line up, or borrow a prop to test it, next, check the gear shift system at the motor end, have someone move the gear control (with engine OFF) while you check the cable end on the motor, does it move back and forth? if no, cable broken, if yes, disconnect the gear cable and move the lever by hand, when turning the prop slowly by hand, does it turn free in neutral, then lock in forward, then reverse?

Thanks for the reply, I will try what you suggested tonight. We took the cover off and everything seemed to be moving the way it should, although it was hard to tell when we were hover over the back of the boat trying to not fall in. I'm just hoping that it has spun the hub, but I know out there on the water I i had not movement out of the prop with it in gear. In neutral it spins freely with no weird sounds or anything. I will try everything you sadi and will repost afterwards.....thanks again

Prop is spun, buy a new one, same pitch and diameter. Good Luck!

Tired everything you said last night and prop is not moving. I can turn the prop in netutral by hand and then put it in gear both forward and reverse and it locks up.
