A friend of mine is looking at a boat w/ a 2006 175HP Johnson.
I am really an I/O guy....

Anything special to look for here?
Any known issues?

I plan on pulling the drain plug on the L/U to check for water.
Maybe do a compression test.......what do I need to disconnect? Can I just remove a plugs and wires and to the test?

Will also plan on doing an on water test.......what is the WOT range for this motor?

Thanks in advance.......

The range depends on how much fuel?
I think they gobble 17 gals per hr at WOT. They do slightly better at cruise.
Max rpm is around 5800.
Remove plugs, ground the plug wires to block for compression.
You ought to ask for a printout of any error codes, it will show if its been overheated.
If its from a dealership and they balk, I'd walk.
Examine cyl heads for blistered paint.

By WOT I menat max RPM range, you're saying 5800RPM's?

These (2006) motors are past the FICHT problems I assume?

Yeh wide open throttle, in the water is around 5600-5800 , depends on prop.
Ficht problems were mostly OMC , BRP bought out the bankrupcy and changed the design.
2001 was the old OMC, starting in 2002 it was BRP.

If you aren't sure just look at the model number of the outboard, if there is an F then its ficht.
Not certain but I think they dropped the ficht name ( they should have anyway if they have any brains). :)

What's the model# ? It could be either carbed or Ficht.

I thought that all the Johnson motors were carbed and it was only Evinrude that used the Ficht technology? I have a 94 175 Johnson and have been very happy with it.

I believe thats true, its carbed, good basic design, low tech, easy to diagnose. Cheaper to buy parts. Tastes better.! :)
