I just picked one of these up for $700. I think it was a great deal. My question is are they a good motor? any draw backs? And is there anything I could do to up the performance? Not looking to go crazy. Anybody have any input? Thanks

MOD# J10RLSDC. The motor is mint. It may have 50hrs on it.

you did good. remember to change the water pump, change the LU oil, and maintain the carp out of her, and she will last for a long long long time...............

oh, and when coming in from a day on the water, disconnect the fuel line and run her out of gas everytime, it will help with keeping the carb clean as much as possible

A bit more work:
You have to change leaf plates and carb and may have to put an insert into the compression relief holes in the cylinder. They did a lot of 'funny' alterations from year to year when this model came out early 90's, not as straight forward as the old ones.

Seems it could get pricey for an extra 5hp. My next question is, convert to short shaft? or build up transom? Converting looks like changing a lot of parts, especially a expensive drive shaft.

you might be better off trading it for a short shaft if possible?

lets see some pics of the back of your boat and go from there???

Well the transom height is 16 in. And I believe the long shaft is 20-22 in., I can't recall at this moment. So, I'm looking at 4-6 in. difference. A simple jack plate could be the solution as long as I beef up the transom to accommodate it. I will definitely get pictures on here.
