I'm a do-it-your-selfer, but sometimes I don't know exactly what I'm doing and I need a little help. This is one of those times. My 2006 Johnson 9.9 trolling motor is getting a small amount of water in the lower gear case. Enough to make the gear lube milky. I changed the washers around the fill/drain plugs and the problem persists. The water pump, etc., was changed earlier in the summer, so I'm thinking it is not that. I'm told by a fishing friend of mine, the reason is most likely my propeller-shaft seal (?). Did I get the terminology correct? On several occasions late in the year, fishing line got tangled in my prop. I didn't realize the extent of it until I was storing the boat for the winter. There was a lot of line and it was really wrapped deep in there and tight. I want to fix this issue in the next month or so. I was told the amount of line I had wrapped around it most likely compromised the seal and is allowing a small amount of water to get in. Does this make sense? I've looked at the part diagram for my motor and which part or parts I need to repair this is confusing me. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thank you.

Prop seal is a pretty easy project. Might want to put new seals in the whole lower unit while you have it out. Order a kit and replace the impeller while you at it.
