I have a 2006 kawasaki I just bought from a insurance auction. It needs to be put back together and a few things.

Here is my question. The bike has 617 original miles. I verified this with the insurance company, and the engine is factory clean. The bike has probably not been ran since 2006. I have not owned a bike with this low of miles before. What are the things i should do before trying to start it? also once i have it running, what is proper break in procedures for the motor?

thanks for the help.

Change ALL fluids including brake fluid.

I would remove all 4 Mikuni carbs and so a clean and service on them......

I would flush the fuel system.......

The tank looks poor........ I would make sure the filters are clear and look for a new tank.

That is a great 600CC sportbike with tons of power....... Have fun and ride safe ........ NICE score!!!

Thanks Bob.

I am deffinetly looking for a new tank and front fairing.

I will pull the carbs off and get them all clean. That is a good idea.

I am not new to the sport bike world. I have over 50,000 riding miles under my belt. I have just never owned a bike with a motor that was not already broken in. I look forward to riding it this summer.

Thanks again for the advice.

No real break in required however, I would not hold any gear at redline and keep redline a bit lower until you hit 1000 miles....... drive it normally and don't treat everyday like it is the last lap. :)

I am more a fan of naked bikes vs fairing myself.

I am just the oposite. Do not like those naked bikes at all. All in personal taste i guess.

I wouldn't worry about the motor break in. Most of those 600's run on needle bearings and given the looks of it, it's seen redline more than once or twice. (probably how it got upside down...) I would change all the fluids and do a carb walk through as mentioned. Also have a good look at the chain, unless it's a sealed O ring type it could be pretty sticky in spots over 6 years of sitting. Tires should be replaced at 6 years old also, they're probably hard as rocks. Trying to save that tank will be an expensive waste of time, should be a few good donor tanks out there. I'm a fairing guy, I've eaten my share of 90 mph hornets and grasshoppers and I'm done with that. And if you get it cleaned back up to stock, it will be much easier to sell in the future with a salvage insurance title if it's all there.

I would crank the engine over a few times with ignition disabled before you start it ...even better oil shot in spark plug holes and pull valve covers off and lube real well before start.....pay attention to your carb sync if rebuilding

thanks guys....

I changed the oil last night. Pulled the carbs, went through them and cleaned them all up. Installed the carbs and the bike fired up after a few cranks. Got a chance to ride it down the street and it seems to be running well.

I am searching for a new tank and front fairing. Ebay has a few. Although im holding out hoping to find the stock silver.
