I have a 2006 loadmaster tandem axle trailer that is making a loud noise and vibrates when brakes are applied. The trailer brakes worked last fall when I towed the boat a short distance, however, the first time out this year they vibrate something fierce and make a horrific noise. One additional note is that after pulling the boat out of the water the brakes seems to work smoothly for 30 minutes or so on the way home. My guess is that once the moisture was gone they went back to vibrating and making a lot of noise. The brakes are not locking up and they are working?.I just need to figure out the vibration and noise. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot or fix would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Pull the drums and look. Best guess would be that some of the shoe retention hardware broke.

My guess is that the brake drums now have a section of rust on their surface. Once this wears off all will be fine. I would remove the drums and make sure there are no broken springs or retainers in there as a precaution, then look at the surface of the drums I'm betting you will find rust on the surface where the shoes make contact. The brakes will not make noise of feel funny when braking when wet because the water inside the drums acts like lubrication, and keeps the shoes from grabbing the rusted section.

Pulled the drums today and everything looked fine. I went ahead and had them turned and they only took a couple thousandths off and they were not out of round according to the guy that did them. Also changed the bearings and race.

No luck! :(

I then tried to isolate the problem by pulling the wheel and pulling the boat and I think it is on the back axle but I think it may be both doing it as they both make the noise, although reduced when the opposite side is off. When both are on it is the same loud noise with vibration. It was also very weird that it did not make noise right after all the maintenance but after a little towing 3-4 min with some stopping it started small and got worse.

Any ideas????

What condition are the linings? Any grease on them at all? Any contamination with grease or oil will cause this.

Thought you had drums. If you have drums, I am talking about the lining on the brake shoes.

Disks have pads. Drums have shoes. What do you have?

Sorry...was in a hurry and intended to say shoes. I am getting new today...Will let you know if that helps but the old ones looked fine with even wear and now signs of contamination.

Have you ever had any grease leak out your rear seal as far as you know?
