2006 Mercruiser Water Leak

Hello.....I just picked up a 2006 Tracker Marine with a 4.3L Mercruiser which appeared to be winterized. I have replaced all 5 drain plugs and checked to fluids. I got it started and within a few minutes I noticed water coming out from between the engine and the exhaust manifold on the right side (cold water). There is a small leak on the left side coming from the same area (hot water). The engine seams to run fine.

I used a mirror but could not see very much. I am thinking I need to remove the manifold and inspect the gasket and whether or not the manifold and/or the head have any apparent cracks in them.

Am I on the right track? Is there anything else I should do before I remove the manifolds? Any help with this matter would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks - Jeff

You are on the right track. Possibilities include; Cracked (freeze damage) or rusted manifolds, cracked block or heads, blown head gasket (warped head or block?). or a combo of. Cold leak would lead me to believe block or head, while hot leak I would think manifold. But not hard and fast.

Not to overlook the heat exchanger, if so equipped (power steering) or sea water in hose from drive for a crack/split spraying up or in a direction leading you to look elsewhere.

Small leaks can be fixed with JB Weld. Grind out the crack in a V-shape, clean, fill with JB Weld, be sure to let cure for AT LEAST 24 hours or more if in cooler climate.

Oh yeah...exhaust manifold gaskets (to heads) should not leak water as they are just exhaust at that point.

Thanks for the reply.

I think I need more that JB Weld. Got the exhaust manifold off and the wide area between the exhaust ports was totally shattered into three pieces. Took the pieces put and there is a gaping 2-3" hole there now. This is just not a good day.

This is just a 2006 model. Someone just did not take care of it at all. Picked this boat up from a reputable dealer and this is what I get. What is the best course of action now. Rebuild or replace? What kind of costs am I looking at?

Any help or directions to get what I need would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff
