I found a deal on a new in box 2007 50 HP ELPTO, and I'm repowering my bayliner 1700 with it. Its replacing the original 1990 Force 50 that came on the boat. I just bought the boat this summer, and cracked a piston on the FORCE the last time i took out the boat. I have a feeling i over-revved the FORCE, so I'm having a tach installed with the new motor. The boat is still in the shop, so I don't have the owners manual yet...

My question is how reliable are the 2007 ELPTO motors? What are the most common issues I need to watch for or do preventative maintenance on, and is there any special break-in procedures I should perform.

I'm also wondering if I should try to get the boat in the water once i get it back just to make sure its operating correctly even though its cold here now?

Thanks,

Re: 2007 ELPTO 50 HP repower

Hi,

Congrats on your new purchase.
It should be a good engine for you.
The only advice I have for you is that if you run it in the cold water Do Not
idle it in neutral at the dock. When your ready to go for a ride start it up and get it in gear as fast as you can. Then you can idle it around for a bit in gear while it warms up before opening the engine up. Idling in forward helps prevent rod and bearing bounce on the crankshaft journal. You engine will thank you.
We run them in the iced up water here in WI all the time like that. Reverse works the same way as forward in this case, any gear but neutral for warm-up.
