I have an 2007 Evinrude 115 hp etec with 180 hrs. When I try to start motor after sitting over night, the starter slowly turns the motor. if motor does not fire up on the initial try, the motor will not start, I have to wait about 20 mins and try it again. If I try to start the motor a second time, the starter appears to not have enough power to turn the motor over and just makes a clicking noise. I have tried starting multiple times including using a booster pack. I noticed the positive wire from the starter silonoid to started gets very hot along with the actual starter. I have replaced both batteries and made sure they are fully charged (12.8 volts). I have check all wiring from batteries to the starter Silonoid and verified all had good connection. I am not sure if this is a starter problem or if something is binding up to prevent the motor from turning over. I have tried pulling the plugs and tried turning the motor over which it did but slower than I expected. Note, if the motor is warm there is no problem turning over the motor and getting it to start. Please help!

Kinda weird.

So I have a 2009 115 E-Tec with 950 hours. The only thing that has ever gone bad (knock on wood) is the starter. Mine didn't do that though, it started making a grinding noise.

To me either, bad wire (ground or hot) or starter. Test voltage at hot side of soloniod while turning the key. Should stay over 10 volts or so. Did you check or clean the main ground wire? (Probably did I assume)

If the motor isn't spinning better check compression. Let's hope that's not the problem.

If things are getting hot you have resistance somewhere.

By the way, when it does start does it run fine? If so than it is electrical. Wire, soloniod or starter.

I had a problem similar to this once. It turned out to be a cracked magnet in the started.

Yes once it does start there is no issues. Boat fires right up once I get past trying to start it initially. Problem occurs once I let the motor sit over night. Even when I pull the plugs and turn over the motor it seems to crank slowly.

I think it is the starter but want to rule out any other issues befor I make the $400 purchase for new starter.
You could remove the starter and bench test it. If you know how to do that. You can't jump the solenoid, at least not in the traditional way, but you can check voltage to it and through it. Remove the wire that goes to the starter and check voltage while someone turns the key.

UPDATE - Replaced the starter and starter silonoid. Issue resolved. Motor now turns over easy on cold starts. Starter was the problem.
