I have a 2007 Bayliner 195 Discovery with a Mercruiser 3.0 135HP I/O engine. This past weekend, the engine started fine, but then kicked out after a few minutes on the water. I was able to turn it over again, but it kept kicking out and while it was running the power was fluctuating up and down (as if it was not getting a steady stream of fuel).

I took it to my boat mechanic to get it checked out. They looked at the fuel line and carburetor and ran the engine and found no problems. They suggested I use Full Throttle fuel additive to mimimize the negative effect of the ethanol in the gasoline. The mechanic told me to take it out again and warm up the engine a little more, and hopefully it should be fine. If not, they are going to have to take it out on the water and test the fuel pressure, which is going to end up costing me a lot more.

Any ideas on other steps I can take to address this problem? Thanks.

I did not see anything about the fuel water separator, I would check it, empty the contents in a glass (jar) and see what is in it. you might have water in the fuel. or the filter is just very dirty and need to be changed. if there is water in the filter you might want to try and siphon some fuel from lowest point of the gas tank and see if there is water in the tank.
I would also check the anti-siphon valve on the gas tank, barbed fitting that the fuel line connects too. if this valve does not work wright it can restrict or stop the flow of fuel to the pump.

Re: 2007 Mercruiser 3.0 Fuel Pressure Problem

Thanks for the advice. Went out on the water with the mechanic today after they found no problems while running the engine on the house. Once in the water, with the back pressure, the engine started kicking out gain. We checked the fuel filter, fuel line, etc. and found no problems. Then we hooked the engine up to an alternate tank of gas, and after a couple minutes is started running fine. So the problem was a fuel issue. Maybe I got a bad batch of gas, maybe the ethanol brought too much moisture into the tank and the fuel line, who knows. We drained the fuel out, and I just filled her back up and put in a little extra Full Throttle additive. So, after $300 worth of work, I ended up finding out that the fuel was the problem all along....

Install (or have installed) a fuel water seperating fuel filter between the tank and the engine. The 3.0L engines never come with one, but always need one.
Then, check and change the filter every year during winterization. It will stop a lot of the problems associated with the E10 fuel.

Re: 2007 Mercruiser 3.0 Fuel Pressure Problem

Thanks again to you guys for the help. I took the boat out two weeks ago after replacing the bad fuel, and it ran fine once I got the throttle up, but it was still a little shaky getting started. Brought the boat in for winterization and some service, and now they are telling me that the carburetor needs to be replaced/ I think this might have been the problem all along, although there may have been bad gas with water as well. Either way, I am taking your suggestion and getting a fuel water separator installed to help prevent these problems for happening again. Hopefully, that won't be very expensive.

Ayuh,... I think you need a New Marina....
1st they sell you Snake Oil instead of changing,+ cleaning the fuel Filters,...
Now, they want you to buy a New carb, without even trying a Rebuild Kit in the original 1....
An 07 boat Don't need a New Carb,... It needs the carb Kitted/ Rebuilt to get all the Crud out of it...

Happy Boatin',+ Welcome Aboard.....

Good afternoon I saw your post today and signed up to be on this forum. My boat is basically doing the same thing it idols great when you go to Revit up it kind of Boggs almost like it’s starving for fuel. Just curious whatever was the issue with yours or are you still having issues?
