I have a 2007 Mercruiser 5.0MPI with a Bravo III drive; Today started the boat to get it warmed up and it ran for several minutes and then died out and stalled (never put it in gear). I thought it odd, so I started it up again, it turned over, ran for about 5 seconds and then died again. It did that several times. I checked the manual and it said it could be the fuel filter; my boat has two gas tanks, first of season I ran off of the starboard tank with no problems, last time out I switched to the port tank and only ran it for maybe 10 minutes. I pulled the fuel filter (per the manual) and the bottom part of the filter is black, but I didn't notice any water anywhere. The engine seems to act like it's not getting any fuel. When I can get it to turn over and give it any gas, it dies immediately. So, again, I'm thinking I need a new fuel filter, but at $110 a piece, I want to make sure I'm not missing something. Engine has 33 hours on it. Thoughts?

Is this the filter that is in a metal box on side of the engine with the 2 fuel pumps in it?The filter is one one side and the pumps are on the other.

"2 fuel pumps", no, but it is the "cool fuel moduel" type that is the aluminum box that has the filter with the 3 screws you undo and lift the fuel filter out. I think it is the second or third "generation" module.

Ok just wanting to know becouse I had to fix one with the same issues that you have and when you remove those 3 screws there is a canister filter in there but that was not the problem.Looking into it further there is another filter under the canister filter, removed it and cleaned it,ran perfect.

Try going back to the other gas tank to see if you can get it to run. Did the fuel look or smell bad or old? You do have too filters in their one is a round disk at the bottom of the tank and the other is normal looking fuel filter in their and the price should be more like $80ish for the too filters. You will need to buy and install a GM style EFI fuel pressure tester gauge that will fit on the GM fuel rail and it will need to read as hi as 100[PSI] form a auto store will work. If you get a high reading at key up and you know their is fuel in the filter tank then there is a good chance the low fuel pump is going bad. Hope this helps a little Good luck with it.:)

I did go back to the other tank, but I think it was too late at that point. Given the boat has just over 30 hours, I would highly doubt a fuel pump going bad. One thing to note is, when it fires up, if I give it any throttle, it will die immediately.

One thing I forgot to mention is that after I put the fuel filter back in, my engine alarm would beep when I went to turn on the ignition and start the motor. Not the typical system beep when you turn the key to "on", but when I would turn it to "start" it would beep again. This the guardian system I suppose, but not sure what that beep means as the manual is not very descriptive. Thoughts?

I've been reading that this could also be an oil pressure sensor issue. My temp and oil pressure were reading good when it was running. How do I test it to make sure though? Where is it located on this particular engine?

So I went back to the boat today and it wouldn't turn over at all. I'm going to replace the fuel filter, but could this possibly be something other than that; that you can think to check as well?

Do you have any warranty left being it's a 07?

double checked and the engine has a two year warranty that would expire this September. Are you thinking this could be a warranty thing? I wouldn't think it would be for a fuel filter, but if a sensor is bad, then I think that would be. What are your thoughts?

You should either clean or replace the to filters look at and suck out the old fuel in the fuel pump tank mounted on the engine, Put new fuel in the pump tank, Then pull some fuel out of both fuel tanks and look and smell them both, If the fuel is good and clean and almost clear then you are fine, If the fuel is old, greenish, brownish, varnished and just plain semlls bad compared to say lawn mower gas can that you should be use to buying, Then you should suck it out, and if it's not that bad but not 100% sure you could just put it in the car's And then put new good gas from a fast paced on land gas store, then try to run the engine with the new gas and if it dose not start still, Then take it in to a big merc dealer and you should be able to get the low or hi volume fuel pump covered if needed. Also from here on out if you know the boat is going to sit for 2 mounths or longer then you really should be putting in fuel stabilizer in both tanks shake the boat up good and then run the engine for 10-12 min, so you are sure the stabilizer has reached the fuel pump so the stabilizer will be sitting in the fuel pump little tank on the engine to try your best to save the pumps, because the pumps are sitting in the fuel and gas goses bad with in 2-3 months:eek:. Tell the dealer you stablized the fuel last year and put new gas in and now it will not start. And tell them it's still under warranty and you would like it checked out and fixed if they can get it coverd due to hard times we are all in. Be as nice to them as you can and that some times works and if they can,t get it coverd and it is a fuel pump then it some times helps if you call merc customer support your self and tell them you tryed to prevent this. Well I hope this helps, Good luck with it.:)

Thanks for the info Boat Teck; I did put stabalizer in it at the end of last year during the winterization process. It has run fine for about a month, and then just on Sunday, started up fine, ran at idle for 5 minutes, and then sputtered and died. I'm heading now to replace the filters and put fresh gas back in the other tank and try it again.

Before you start the engine try finding the fuel shrader valve on the fuel rail by the throttle body it will look like a tire valve styem to put air in it with a black cap, with a rag in hand and covering it up try pushing in the center needel to release the air that might be in the fuel rail system then try to start it up, you might need to do this a few times while trying to start it up to see if it will take off. This is just an idea is all. good luck.

UPDATED: Re: 2007 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI stalling

Ok, a bit of an update. I just got back from changing the fuel filter, it was really dirty; this is a Gen III model so it has the canister fuel filter with a wafer filter on the bottom (see parts 21 and 26 in the link:) http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...=12840&bnbr=70&bdesc=Fuel+Supply+Module(Bravo)

I also put 5 gallons of fresh fuel into the tank that I had been running off of for the last month. Still would not start, not even close really. I even released the pressure via the shrader valve in the fuel line and nothing. I'm at a complete loss as to what to do next. The boat has 38 hours on it, but still under warranty. I guess I'm going to call a mechanic, but is this something that would be under warranty? I guess if it's not running for whatever reason it would be huh? Is there anything else I can check in the mean time?

Re: 2007 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI stalling

I have a 2004 MPI and mine just started doing something very similar, but it will start after about 20 min. When I launch the boat it will start and run fine for as long as I want. After I shut it off it will start but die after I try to get on plane. Then it will Start and die several times. If you give it gas it dies immediately. After 20 min. it will start and act as if nothing was ever wrong. I've put new fuel in it, I haven?t checked the fuel filter. I also noticed the battery voltage is around 10 to 12 could this have something to do with it? The boat only has 116 hrs on it. It has had 6 tanks of fuel ran through it this year with no problems.
Thanks for any help.
