About 2 weeks ago I checked the bilge and found oil floating around. A lot of oil. I checked the engine oil and drive oil and both were full however the power steering was empty. I topped off the power steering and bled the system as stated in the manual and everything seemed find. I took her for a 20 minute ride through the no wake zone and checked the bilge and it was empty so I took her out to the island (3 minutes no-wake, 10 minutes on plane) and back and didn't seem to have any issues.
This past weekend, I took a look in the bilge and there's oil again. This time, the power steering is full, the oil is full, the drive oil is full and the trim pump is full. I didn't check the trim 2 weeks ago. Just like last time, there is no sign of where the oil might be coming from. The oil pan / gasket is dry, the lifter cover looks a little wet but not enough for there to be a visible run, the power steering pump/hoses/ram are all dry. Again, no sign of where the oil might have come from and everything is full.
Now, while checking the engine oil the dipstick tube broke. Apparently it was rusty and when I pulled the stick, the top part of the tube came with it. I already ordered a new one and when it arrives I will thread the right size bolt into what's left of the tube and pull it out either with a slide hammer or with a socket and a wrench, using the bolt as a puller. There is no oil around the dipstick tube that would indicate that oil came out from there but I'm not going to rule it out until the tube is replaced.
So my question is.... What am I missing? Obviously the engine oil could be low since the tube is broken and probably allowing the stick too deep into the pan so once the tube is replaced I'll be changing the oil and filter. The bottom of the filter feels like the paint is bubbling which I suspect could be caused by rust under the paint or a pinhole that would allow oil into the bilge without any oil showing on anything else because it's a straight drop from the end of the oil filter.
I want to make sure next time I work on it that I cover all bases because hauling it out to empty the oily water from the bilge is a pain and I'd like to get this solved the first time.... But wouldn't we all.
Thanks.
