EDIT: Admins. My apologies. I did not mean to post multiple copies of this thread, but each time i tried to post, I was notified that there was a server issue, and I assumed that the post was not posting. I could not see a mechanism to remove the extraneous posts, but please feel free to delete these as necessary.

Can you name that tune (or sound)?

I have a 2008 Mercruiser 4.3 MPI with an AlphaOne out-drive in a 2008 SR 205 Sport. After doing the annual service, replace oil and fuel filters, drive lube and engine oil, I started the engine in the driveway, out-drive in neutral, while on the hose and motor flusher. After coming up to operating temperature (+/-170F) I began to hear a unidentified, intermittent sound coming from the engine bay. I was unable to locate the origin of the noise (sounds like a turkey call?), but I was wondering if anyone recognizes the sound.

In the linked video below, the sound can be heard at the following time stamps, but skipping to about 45 seconds and you'll hear the loudest the noise gets:

https://youtu.be/WMY2MgXfUfc

0:10, 0:26, 0:45 - This is the loudest occurrence by far, 1:07, 1:23, 1:50, 1:58, 2:18 and 2:37.

So? Do i have a turkey in my engine, or what?

Other information that may be pertinent:

Engine started right up after servicing; however, it ran a bit rough at first. I figured this was just working the air out of the fuel lines after changing the filter. After 5-10 seconds, it settled down and idled well. This appears to be normal and happens each year at first start.

Approximately 20 -30 seconds after start up, I'm guessing, the engine alarm went off with a solid, continuous buzz. This is not normal for a first season start. I checked the oil pressure and operating temperature. Engine temp was was barely registering on the gauge and the oil pressure seemed to be normal, although I do not recall what the reading was, but it was within a normal range of gauge readings, maybe 30 to 40 psi? After about 10 -15 seconds of the alarm, I shut down and looked for what was causing the alarm.

After inspection there were no obvious leaks of oil or water in the bilge. Oil level was approx. 1/2 quart low, but I had not yet topped it off after initially filling after the oil change and adding 4 quarts to start. I verified that the hose and flusher was on the drive in the right spot and that there was adequate water flowing. All was good.

I restarted the engine again. After another 20-30 seconds the alarm sounded again. Continuously. Rechecked the gauges, again; All good. Verified that water was flowing out of the out-drive; Good flow, no issue. Figuring, the alarm was not an oil pressure of temperature issue, I let the engine run with alarm sounding. After approximately 30-45 seconds the alarm stopped and never came back on. Engine idled stable in neutral and ran up to operating temperature after 10 mins, and this is when I began to hear the intermittent noise.

Don't think I would worry about the sound right now, might just be air in the water

Not knowing the serial number, I would say that the most probably cause for the alarm would be the water pressure sensor. This is just a guess because those things are always causing problems.

Otherwise the alarm can be the usual other suspects, overheat (ECT), oil over heat, CPS error, PCM error, but all these would need a scanner to see

Not sure how those turkeys got in the engine . . . :noidea: Did you leave the engine hatch open over night?

Can you localize it? I might loosen the SERP belt to see if the bearings in the water pump, alt, ps pump or idler pulley are getting noisy & rough.

Next/anytime you start the engine bring the idle speed right up to 1300 RPM as that is the suggested RPM to run the engine at on the garden hose also you'll be checking to see if you still hear that noise which I don't think you will at that higher RPM only at idle as that sound sounds sort of familiar at idle to me.

As mentioned it could be air in one of the systems, a certain pound load number on the belt to pulleys at that idle RPM, or a debris of some sort to the belt or pulley's....Also next time try turning the steering wheel a little and a lot to see if it's part of the steering system and if it goes away after moving the steering fluid, etc. 'Though turning the wheel would change the load to the belt system too possibly making it worse or better.

With the engine off grab some pulleys by hand to see if something feels extra loose.

Agreed, oftentimes you can FEEL bearings start to get rough before they make noise, the noise will be intermittent at first and then become constant.

Get it in the water and see. I’ve spent many wasted hours worrying about funny noises running on the hose. To date...no turkey noises though !
