Hi i have not been on here in a while so i am not familiarized with where to post this. But i have a problem. When i first took the boat out, it was a nice sunny day, and i parked it on an incline with the stern of the boat at the bottom of the incline. The gas expanded in the tank and it leaked out, i didnt notice it until to late, and some of the paint/sticker??? I dont know if its a wrap... but i think its paint. I will get pictures in a little bit.
But i peeled away the stuff that just came off by moving my hand across it. so now i have a spot on the stern that is just pure aluminum, the black paint peeled off.

My question is, since its a 16,000 boat... am i going to be able to fix this DIY? also if i take it into a shop would they be able to patch that spot alone? or would they have to repaint the whole boat?
its a 17 footer. i will post pictures little bit later.

Re: 2008 aluminum boat paint peeling

What 2008 aluminum $16K 17ft boat? Starcraft/Crestliner/Alumacraft/SeaNymph?

Peeled down to bare aluminum?? No self etching or zinc chromate primer 1st? Or a metal primer of any kind below the finish/top coat of black?

I doubt factory paint would peel off down to bare aluminum after 1 fuel spill. No prior evidence of fuel or other damage to that area of paint?

Many single stage paints w/out added hardener might peel after 1 fuel spill, esp if there wasn't SE/ZC or primer of any kind shot 1st.

If it peeled just on the transom, you might get lucky & only have to get the transom black re-shot. But all blacks aren't the same blacks, esp after 5yrs. But again, I doubt you're seeing factory 5yr old paint peel down to bare aluminum.

But maybe it was just the Monday after super bowl, and over at the spray booth, the paint prep was a bit lacking.....

More details are in order, but as stated, no factory paint would ever do this or else it was defective. Did you buy it new? Any other areas that are losing paint? Snap a bunch of pictures and post em up. Lot's of experts here.

thanks for all the replies. So its a 2008 Jetcraft 1725 Adventurer.
Pictures below. It looks like the primer is still on there because i can see a flat grey spot, i assume thats the primer, and than brushed aluminum.

That should be a warranty repair but it's been 5 years. I wonder if Jetcraft will step up? I know a lady who owns a nice little 20 foot North River that developed a pretty bad leak from a hull crack and the newly organized North River company fixed it for free even though her boat is about the same age as yours.

I will call them and check. Apearently Jetcraft has rebranded to Kingfisher Boats. I will try them. I assume its going to be a complete repainting? how much does that usually go for if its not covered by factory.
