I'm looking to replace my Dodge 2500 (Cummins) with a 2008 Ford F 350. I have had a hell of a time with the DPF filter and all the exhaust issues it causes. This week was the final straw when I had to have the EGR repaired and the turbo cleaned.....again! I came across a nice truck today but the dealership was already closed. I'm heading back in the morning to take a closer look and a test drive. Does anyone have any insight on the Ford for 2008. Its a 4x4 with the Powerstroke. Not sure of miles but the place that has it deals in larger trucks most of which have around 60k-80k. Dont know price yet either. I know, there's a lot I don't know right. I guess what I'm after is any of those known issues that pop up......... like the DPF issue on the Cummins or the variable timing issue on the Ford 5.4L gas engine. These are well know issues which have both bit me in the last 4-5 years and I don't want to make the same mistake again. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Dave

Is it a 6.0 Powerstroke? If it is they have problems with the EGR cooler valve and fuel injectors. The worst thing about the fords is that to do anything on the engine you have to remove the cab. Not a shade tree mechanic friendly setup. The company i work for has a small fleet of these that spend quite a bit of time in the dealership being repaired.

T_Herrod,

No I think it's a 6.4L. I've been doing some Internet searching and found that they have several common issues such as main seal leaks, bad radiators, and some kind of issue with the injectors that allows oil to leak into the combustion chamber. Addtionally they have had many issues with loss of power and lunging or racing of the engine which has brought on a few law suits. I'm not that advanced in diesel mechanics but this sounds like a mess for Ford. I'm gonna go look at this truck in the morning but I'm kind a little skeptical. They also get poor mileage as compared to older and newer fords and certainly less than my current 2007.5 Cummins 6.7L. which registers 22-23 on flat ground without a load and averages around 16 with in town driving averaged throughout the week. In fact, I filled it up in Denham Springs La. (east of Baton Rouge on I12) and drove it nonstop to Portland TX (Corpus Christi) and got 18.5mpg on that trip. If it were not for the constant problems I would keep this truck forever but the dang thing is killing me in repairs! FRUSTRATED!

Several friends with fords in those years have had turbo issues as well. Good luck. I think unless you go new, or warranty any 08 anything, your probably just buying someone elses problems. Especially buying from a dealer who knows NOTHING about that particular vehicle.

The 6.4 motors werent good. Theres a reason they only made them from 08-10. They have all the dpf and emissions crap that you currently have, im guessing you have an about a 2008 cummins with the 6.7 bluetec possibly. Im surprised at the issues youve had with that one, but you certainly will have the same issues if you go with the 6.4 They have injector problems and they go through a dpf cleaning cycle which uses your fuel to clean out the dpf filter, and causes your truck to white smoke and the computer tells you you need to drive at highway speeds and dont stop until the cycle is over. I see a lot of these trucks broken down on the side of the road.

Ayuh,.... The Problem with newer Ford trucks is the Cab....

It overhangs the motor so much, the cab is Pulled to work on the motors...

Sounds to me like you have a pretty good truck. I would just fix it and keep driving it.
My current truck is a 2011 F550 with a 6.7L and it seems really solid. It pulls my mechanic truck down the road with ease and the truck is really heavy. My fuel mileage is only about 9 MPG but like i said it's really heavy because of the service body with crane and parts/tools. But the 6.7 is a good motor.

Do yourself a favor and get a Dodge with the 5.9L. I got a 2001 F250 with the 7.3L, and only other diesel that I'd get is the 5.9L.
