The wiring to the tachometer on my 2008 60hp Big Foot has four wires --
purple, black and gray connected to the tachometer there is also a yellow wire that is not connected to anything. what is the yellow wire for?

Are you saying the yellow wire is connected at the tach, but not the other end? If thats the case its for the light in the tach and would go to the light switch, if you want the light to work.

the yellow wire is not connected to anything, it is taped to the harness.

some wiring diagrams show the extra wire for the trim gauge sensor as brown and white. did mercury change their wiring colors?

I want to add a trim gauge.

gray wire= tach
purple wire= tach
brown wire- tach

yellow wire= nothing

the brown and white wire has been changed on the 2006 and up Mercury outboards to yellow for the trim sensor.
