So i am about angry...... Due to some first year issues my boat was used 3 times... got a brand new engine. Now I take it out for the first time and the trim just quits... so I pull the boat out ... Manually lift the I/O and find White (I presume Contaminated) Hyd fluid leaking from the right side of the pump. it has these four lines coming out of the top and a keeper holding them in place. looks like they all have orings they seat in... Then i pull the keeper - take a close look... appeared that all was seated properly so i topped the fluid and lifted the i/o . as soon as it topped out it flooded fluid from the back of pump.

I am presuming this is a take it back to the dealer moment.... but it sucks because i am 4 hours drive away from the place and I just left. anyone have any ideas or dealt with this funky setup before??

You aren't the only one. There have been 3 other posts about this problem in the last few weeks, and I have run into 2 of them bad at work.

The only fix is to replace the whole pump assembly at $700 for the pump

For a 2009 model you should still have warranty I hope. I assume its got 2 years on it.

Don - is there an alternative pump design i could put in instead of this wacky design that is just going to keep having issues long after my warranty is gone??

Hello,

I just had the same issue. Luckily this repair was covered under warranty. The original made it through two seasons. Sure looks to be a systemic issue with the pump. Not thrilled about potentially having to replace a part that is > $500.00 at routine intervals. Seems to be a weak link in what otherwise seems to be a good outdrive. It would be nice if there was replacement part that has been reengineered to eliminate these issues.

Nope, this is a new Volvo design in 2007. There are no alternative parts. Volvo still has sole rights to it for a few more years. They really need to come out with a new cover with a better alternative to those glued in plugs. The pump works fine, but that plastic housing in between is just garbage.

Don,

I really need to jump in here being that this has happend to others and myself. This seems to me to be a defect issue. Its all the same problem on the same side. What are the chances getting Volvo to cover this as a defect. I'm going to call on Monday and speak to a consumer representative and I'm planning on using the information found here as a reference. Is that Ok?

I have no problems what-so-ever if you show this post to Volvo.
I worked for a Volvo dealer in the past and have been Volvo certified (expired now :( ) and know they do listen to customer input.
If I were to own an IO, it would be a Volvo hands down, but not the SXA setup with that trim pump. That's a deal breaker for me, it is just pure junk.
