2009 Volvo 4.3 GXi - How to read engine codes

Hello.
Started up the boat this spring and idles a bit rough and does not seem to be running 100%.
Was looking for a way yo pull the engine codes without purchasing an expensive (>$500) reader.
Someone have the pin outs / method for reading the codes?

there are some less expensive readers that just give you the code(s), but nothing else. I opted for the full computer program to 'see' the whole picture. (Mercruiser though . . .)
