Just bought a 2001 Merc. 200hp caburated, saltwater motor. it's on a 23' Fishmaster. Motor runs great but after about 8.5 hrs it started to make clattering noise. It seams to be coming from the lower unit but it checked out fine. The shop says it is what's called deceleration knock. They say it is fairly common and act like it is no big deal but if it is indeed d/k, the article I found on it says that it is cauesd by the high speed jet being too lean and can be rectefied with a richer setting. It also sayed that if neglected it would damage the motor. Has anyone heard of this and can you shine some light on the matter.
