Hi all!

I just acquired myself a larson boat with a 1981 Mercury 200hp. (at least i think its a 1981. The serial# is 5464894).

Now my problem... The water doesnt seem to be flowing out of the motor as it should be. At highend speeds she and spits out intermittently. And it idle speeds it doesnt seem to be coming out at all. I was just going to take apart the foot and rebuild the waterpump. Any other suggestions first?

Also the other problem is with the reverse. When the motor is running on shore with the "ear muffs" the motor goes into reverse no problem. But when I put the boat in the water she doesnt seem to want to go into reverse. It makes the same sound as if the motor was still turning too fast, almost like a gear "grinding" sound.

Any thoughts?

How about my serial number, does it match a 1981?

Thanks in advance!

so first thing first. Yes replace the water impellar and dont run that motor with any throttle until you do. That 40$ impellar will save you a lot of trouble. secondly make sure theres nothing blocking the water coming out (IE mud)... Next drain your lower end fluid and check for metal shavings. that grinding noise is the sound of a lower end clutch not getting into gear and metal on metal is never good. If there is metal shavings or dust take her in to a mechanic. If not your problem is most likely your linkages are off or your not quite throwing it into reverse far enough.... Good luck

Re: 200hp, waterpump and reverse questions

I just got the boat and motor tonight so I havent dug into anything yet. The guy did tell me that there were no shavings in the oil when it was drained. (I am taking his word for it). I will be working on the motor tomorow night. Any suggestions for the linkage adjustment??

As fas as "bring it to a mecanic" goes, I am the mechanic :) I was just curious to know if there are any known issues with this model of ouboard.

Also how about the year of the motor?
