Hi I have a new DT40 2 stroke which is the coldest motor I have ever had, From a cold start, it coughs and farts until it is warm. I got a service and there was no change. It has dome maybe 20 hours and gets run in fresh and salt water. Once warm, it goes like a cut cat and no problems starting and idling. Would a different set of plugs improve the cold start?

Crash.

Stay with the parts recommended for your motor if you want you warranty to stay active.
Is this a manual choke motor and do you allow it to warm up on fast idle a few minutes before putting in gear?
What did the Suzuki trained tech say about it when you told them about your problem?

Hi,

It has a manual choke. It wont idle to allow a warm up and you need to operate the throttle continually as if you put it in gear, it will stall. Take about 10 mins of revving before it will idle. If it was not for the electic start you would never get it to run as you would be too stuffed to pull it this much. Similar symtoms to a blocked idle jet, but when it is warm, it is good all day. Will idle well and does not stall once you get it running. I have check the plugs for fouling but they look good. Was like this when I had it first serviced and it is getting worse. I like a far way away for an agent and would need time of work to travel to get them to check it.

Sounds like carbs need to be cleaned, or you are not using the choke and fast idle system properly, but if it is getting worse I would go with the carbs

This is a new motor -- hardly in need of a carb rebuild/cleaning. I also suspect you are not using the choke and fast idle system properly (they are different systems). Is it possible you have some contaminated fuel? Using the choke is not a full on/full off technique. Full on to start -- then partial choke for a bit, then full off.

I recently put a newer DF30 on my son's skiff, they are very cold blooded motors, use the choke as Silvertip advised.

Re: 2010 DT40 Cold Start

I have been pulling the choke out until it fires. Put it in and crank again and then it snuffs. I was not aware that there is a fast idle half way back. This could be what I am doing wrong. I will try to put it half way back next time.

Thanks for the tip. I don't think it is fuel quality, as I have a bigger boat that runs the same fuel so thay both would be a problem. It runs fine. But I will check the filters for contamination or water.
