I am looking to buy a small outboard and am looking at the Mercury 9.9 and 8. I consider myself pretty good with the internet but have been unable to figure out what the different letters after the 9.9/8 stand for. The different models I have seen have been.

9.9M
9.9ELPT 4S
9.9ELHPT BF PK
9.9ELH
9.9EL
8M 4S

I have figured out the BF is Big Food and PK is Pro Kicker.
I am thinking 4S might be 4 stroke not sure.

I would love some assistance here. A couple of the motors I am looking at are left overs from last year and I do not expect them to last much longer.

Thanks so much for everyone's help.

I think PK (ProKicker) is for a new 9.9 they came out with.

Thank you very much everyone. I did not expect to get the answer so quickly. I expect to using the board more in the future as I am going to be fixing up my Sea Nymph with a new floor, lights, wiring and other things.

Thanks a lot.

I see Cabelas has a 9.9 Bigfoot PK. Do you know if this is the same as the 9.9 Pro Kicker and if not how do they compare?

Re: 2010 Mercury 9.9 - what do the different letters stand for?

To the best of my knowledge and all of the research that I did before purchasing my 9.9 EH (electric, handle, short shaft) the 9.9 Bigfoot PK is basically a combination of the Bigfoot package and the ProKicker package.

Basically you are getting the bigger these Bigfoot options:

* 20% larger prop increases control especially at low speeds.
* Taller gearcase puts the prop deeper, below turbulent water, for improved performance.
* A low 2.42:1 gear ratio delivers thrust and maneuveraility that big loads demand.
* Oversized Antiventilation Plate. Oversized design prevents air from being drawn into the prop, which increases efficiency.

And these ProKicker options:

* The 9.9hp Mercury ProKicker features a compact, integrated power tilt and a heavy-duty transom bracket for maximum strength, speed, and durability.
* Additionally, the 9.9hp ProKicker sports an updated graphics package designed to complement the OptiMax Pro XS and Verado outboards. Installed next to a Pro XS or Verado outboard, the improved ProKicker graphics will make your rig stand out from the rest of the pack.
* Patented Centering Straps. Holds the engine straight without additional hold-downs when running in rough conditions or trailering (Standard on Tiller Pro Kickers).

Hope this helps you some.
