Ok I have a 2011 Nissan Outboard 5hp. I am wanting to transport the motor in the back of my Outback. No issue there. My problem is looking at the motor it appears that all the weight would be on the handle. Is this really how it is designed. I would have to put all the weight of the motor on this handle as it looks like it is just cast aluminum. I would have to break the handle on a new motor.

Help :)

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Seems like you have it backwords, all the Nissan 5hp outboards that I have seen have provisions for laying the outboard on its side opposite the throttle arm, on 2 nubs molded into the case. Unless your particular year model is different, I would double check the owners manual for this............Don

The manual seems pretty definitive............Don

The manual is correct. Tiller down. That is the correct orientation for any NSF4/5/6 (year is irrelevant). The reason that you must transport in that orientation is so that the oil does not spill out of the crankcase, or fill the cylinder and cause liquid lock. Note also that the power head should be elevated 2-4 inches. OTOH, if you completely drain the crankcase before transport, you can ship in any orientation.

In the last 12 years I have never even heard of anyone breaking a handle due to transport.

pvanv...the 2-4" OTOH ..where did this come from?It is not mentioned in the manual.
In fact, the whole mystery of oil getting into the cyl is not well covered in the manual.
I have 6hp-4str-nissan on a sailboat and it can experience some large heave movements, although
temporary, one would think that this also would cause a problem with the oil getting into the cyl.
Besides getting into the cyl, are there other areas, also, where the oil can accidently migrate to?
This is one of the reasons that I hesitate to transport the engine in an automobile, even laid down properly, as the sudden stop and start of the vechicle could also send the oil where it is not supposed to go. So I leave the engine on the boat.
I always appreciate your comments and feedback and find them informative and helpful.
Thanks

Read the note in the manual page above...Oil can also wind up in the carburetor if it laid down incorrectly. You should be fine in a car though. Where people end up in trouble, with a small 4-stroke, is when they swing the lower unit up into the air while they are bear hugging the engines power head. That lower unit needs to be kept as low as possible during the swing. IE If you are swing the engine and the prop is at eye level, you will have a problem. But, it is not a big deal if and when this does happen. Just pull the spark plug. Pull the engine starter 20 times, wipe the plug off and put it back in....It will start.

What Elvin said. Plus... All 4-stroke OB's have vented crankcases. If liquid oil is allowed to run through that vent, it can end up in the carb, intake manifold, and cylinders... as well as all over the inside of the cowl, and the car/truck. If you keep the LU lower than the power head, and lay the motor on the correct side, you should be fine.
