Good afternoon, its been a while since I've logged in. In the years since, I have gotten away from cruisers and into pontoons and for the most part, cant be happier.
Anyways, I have a pontoon boat rated for up 75hp. Boat is a 2014 Suntracker with a 2013 Mercury 40 hp 4 stroke EFI Bigfoot. In doing some research, it seems to me the 40, 50 and 60hp 4 stroke mercs are all the same engine as the parts are all the same between the three, and to make the 40hp into a 60hp I need to remove the restrictor out of the intake, and replace the ECU with a Merc 60hp ECU. In addition I would also need to step up in prop pitch.
Question is: what years ECU's will interchange with a 2013 Mercury 40hp 4 stroke bigfoot? I heard that 2009 and up ECU's will interchange but I am not sure.
Thanks for any insight.

Alrighty, I managed to get the job done and the motor is converted to a 60hp unit. I accomplished this by comparing the blueprints and parts list of all 3 motors, the 40, 50 and 60hp four stroke four cylinder EFI mercs. They are bolt for bolt identical in every way except for the ECU and a restrictor plate. Now, its important to understand that this does not apply to the 3 cylinder 40hp motor as thats a different engine.
The conversion was rather simple. I got in touch with an outboard motor parts recycler and purchased a 60hp ECU for $300. This ECU was from 2017, but is fully compatible.
From there all I had to do was remove the 40hp ECU and the restrictor plate, and install the 60HP ECU with no restrictor plate.
It fired right up, runs as it should.
