I just bought a Lund Rebel with a 40 HP EFI on it. Maiden voyage made it 1 mile from the launch and it started to sputter and then creep down to an idle and then die. Got towed in and got it home, all 3 plugs were fouled. Installed 3 new NGK plugs and it still will not start. Pull off fuel filter and the starboard side and it is full of gas and water. I blew out the filter, unhooked the gas tank, installed a new one with fresh gas and kept pumping the bulb until clear gas ran out and reinstalled filter and primed it again.

Still will not start or even attempt to catch.

The warning buzzer comes on and I hear the ful pump cycle. I hit the schrader valve on the fuel separator on the port side and some more water came out. Still will not start but builds good pressure on the valve every time I check it.

Now I am stumped. Am I missing something that is still gunked up or fouled? PS, this motor has a whopping 4.5 hours on it but was not stored properly, obviously. It is under warranty but they will not do anything about neglect, I highly doubt anyways.

Hi there, welcome to iboats!:)

Well you do have two fuel filters. One's an inline filter and the other one is more of a small water separator and some of them have a sensor inside that could sound the warning horn should it detect water. Which one did you blow out? Both seen below.

You also have what's know as a Vapor Separator Tank that holds a good amount of fuel so chances are there is some water left inside the tank too. The tank should be where you found the Schrader valve item #22, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show....png&inbr=12821&bnbr=95&bdesc=Vapor+Separator

At some point in your diagnostics you'll want/need to know what exactly the fuel pressure is to help know what may be next on the list.

Where you able to determine how so much water got into the fuel system?

Have your engine serial number handy to confirm your engine parts catalog like linked above?

Your Mercury service manual part number should be 90-883064R02. http://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_from...3.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=90-883064R02&_sacat=0

Now that you've tried to restart it with new spark plugs, pull out a couple of the easier plugs to reach and recheck their condition.
