I just bought a new Carolina skiff j16cc with Yamaha 40hp. Took boat out for first time and it has a severe porpoising problem. Already has smart tabs installed from factory. Has power trim, which I have to keep all the way down to get on plane but as soon as It does it starts to porpoise. Should I go down a prop pitch?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Nice pictures, but not of the possible problem area,.....

With a 4' straight-edge, put it under the bottom of the boat on the keel line, from the transom forward,.....

That area should be straight,....
My guess is yer gonna find a rocker in the bottom,....

In my experience, I have run 3 in that size, that's just the way they are. I believe they were designed to be an inexpensive work boat. That is the most shiny Carolina I have ever seen.

Prop pitch has nothing to do with it, prop type can, but look elswhere for a solution.

Move weight forward, adjust the trim tabs and you will probably be able to dial it with these simple no cost methods.

Recreational boats should ride parallel to water level while OB runs trimmed to 90?, provided that deck weight is evenly distributed. Combo could have a bady height seated OB along improper prop pitch which will slow the hole shot. What's the max factory permited HP OB on that skiff ? Is it possible to lower or raise OB on transom.

Go for a wot spin as suggested and report back max wot rpm achieved as usually loaded, then can work from there. Water test should be made on flat calm no wind water cond.

I'm no expert but the hull looks like it would porpoise just by looking at the way it was made. Just my opinion :)

1995,
To check if OB is ideal transom seated, go for a wot run on flat calm no wind water cond while trimmed fully out, once on plane trim to 90?, check if prop aereates at speed at straight water course and at tight close turns, if does, OB is improperly height seated, Need to check max wot rpm achieved, could need a prop maximization to plane faster , without a tach reading will never know..

If it were a a manaufacturer flaw, imagine the large list of dissatisfied clients the porpoising issue will bring along bad boat reviews by clients. Untill OP doesn't report back his findings will remain boating in Limbo Land..

Happy Boating
