Hello, new to the forum and boating. I have a 2018 2.1 4 stroke EFI that seems to have some shaking/vibration in neutral and at idle. Boat (2018 bayliner e16) drives great, hole-shot is good, holds speed fine. But on the hose or in the water at neutral the vibration is not terrible but it certainly shakes a good 1/4 inch at least. New gas in the tank, think the previous owner let it sit a lot and for whatever reason drained the gas tank before winter. Oil looks super clean. Low pressure fuel filter seems ok. Is this normal? My vessel view module should be in tomorrow to see if it triggers any codes. Hoping someone here might have a guess as our local dealer is sort of unfriendly. Here is a video of it attached.

Hi. So I have the same engine as this (well the same base engine…mine is the 115 version). When she is cold and on a warm up…they tend to do this a little. Especially with a cable steering set up with a little play in it. I’d think that is what’s happening to yours. I fitted baystar steering and it doesn’t move at all now. But they do run a little rough for the first few minutes after start up for sure. Yours will be emphasised further is she has manual cable steering and tilted up and to the side like that.

Probably needs a good run too. They run very cold temperatures I’ve noticed also.

Thanks for the quick response! I’m am super particular about maintenance and am just concerned about burning up a piston if it’s a faulty injector or something. I’ll keep this thread posted if the vessel view shows any codes when it comes in the mail tomorrow. I hope you are right and it’s super encouraging to hear it from someone with the same motor!

Yeah. Quite sure of it. Sounds and looks exactly like mine on a cold start when I had old steering fitted. Then after a few mins they settle down and don’t move. Almost silent running too. Amazing engines I think. I’ve got mine on a 19ft deep v cuddy. So powerful too. It’s a CT model. Just incredible on fuel too. Found mine runs beat when it’s propped suitably to reach its max rpm.
I’ve got the VesselView mobile installed on mine too. Sc1000 gauges too. She will cruise around 21/22 mph and cover 1.5-1.7 miles per litre of fuel. Just incredible.

I’ve found it’s a good idea to change the oil a little more often than normal too. Just because they run so cold. Well here at least anyway. They hold about 5-5.2 litres of oil including filter I’ve found. There is a wee fuel strainer in the injection rail too, that’s good to clean out every 300 hours or so. I’m just touching 1000 hours on mine now. Still runs as new and has been faultless.

Yep plan to change oil this weekend and have new low pressure fuel filter on the way as well. Is there a trick to removing the clamp on the fuel rail to remove that filter?

There is a guy on YouTube that has a good guide. It’s the same as most mercs that age. Mine was spotless to be fair. Even after 400 hours

Update: hooked up VesselView today and ran it on the hose for a few minutes (it’s terrible weather in Ohio today). No faults were triggered so to anyone else reading in the future with the same shake/vibration as of today it looks like we’re good 🤷‍♂️.
